Story
Us in a Bus is a small local registered charity based out of Redhill Aerodrome. We support people who are often isolated and who find communicating with the world (and the people in it) a massive challenge. The people we support have profound and multiple learning disabilities, complex needs and sensory processing differences, requiring speciality assistance to build meaningful engagement with others. Our services enable the people we see to access life-enriching experiences and to participate in the everyday things we take for granted such as time with friends, expressing how we are feeling and making choices for ourselves. Using Intensive Interaction at a weekly session, our Interaction practitioners aim to cut through some of these complexities and concentrate on what makes us all the same; the need to connect and communicate with each other in a way that means something to us and that contributes positively to emotional well-being.
Our 2024 Fundraiser has an adventurous twist! We are planning a daring abseil down Senate House, which is the administrative centre of the University of London, located in the heart of Bloomsbury, London. Designed by Charles Holden, this Art Deco building was constructed between 1932 and 1937 as the first phase of a large uncompleted scheme for the university. It stands about 200 feet (64 meters) tall, equivalent to 19 floors.
*****Update*****
Unfortunately, we have had to postpone our abseil on the 5th of October. This is due to the Trustees of Senate House deciding to restrict the access to the building after people accessed the roof, without permission, to fly a sizeable Palestinian flag.
Big Bang Experiences, the company organising the abseil, are currently in the process of securing an alternative location for us, and as soon as we have a new date and venue, we will let you know. Until then, we will keep fundraising and preparing!
Thank you so much for your continued support
Kind regards
The Us in a Bus Team
