Story
LAWG was founded in the aftermath of the evacuation of vulnerable Afghans from Kabul in the summer of 2021.
Our beneficiaries are Afghan judges and lawyers who worked alongside UK personnel in Afghanistan, championing rule of law and human rights. They fled their homes and are starting again in the UK.
We provide English lessons (through British Council accredited Hilderstone College), English law and civics lectures and vocational workshops, to accelerate our beneficiaries' journey into the workplace.
We know our approach works. Some of our participants have already found work in the legal world, all have shown impressive progress in their English (measured through IELTS testing) and all have told us how valuable the support provided by LAWG has been to them.
We are raising £45,700 to extend our existing programme to:
Increase the hours of English tuition we deliver to our existing beneficiaries, from 6 to 9 hours per week for the next 12 months.
Deliver 6 hours of English tuition per week to a brand new group of 8 beneficiaries, for the next 12 months.
We receive valuable pro-bono time and expertise from law firms and legal experts to deliver our vocational training programme and law lectures series. What we need most now is money to fund critical English lessons. LAW-G receives no government support; we are entirely reliant on the generosity of individuals, organisations and volunteers.
"From the start, I felt the outstretched hand of LAWG. They helped me enormously with my language fluency and put me on a path to a brighter future. I have just started full-time work in a law firm. My memories of LAW-G will remain with me over the years, especially bright and warm. You have been a guiding light to me." Fahida S, LAWG beneficiary
