Story

The Cal Poly Humboldt Men's Lacrosse Club Team has been proud to represent the university as one of the two-hundred-plus teams in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) since 1985. However, being a primarily self-funded club team in a league as large and established as the MCLA does lead to some financial challenges. The club team is primarily supported through contributions from individual players and alumni, along with a portion of funding through the university’s recreational sports department. This funding covers our annual costs, such as league dues, referee fees, and travel expenses; but it is not enough to cover the costs of replacing equipment or other one-time expenses.

Your generous donation will go a long way in allowing the team to ensure a smooth operation. Backstop nets, for example, are an expense that serves an important safety function by preventing bystanders from being struck by an errant ball as well as a cost-saving measure by reducing the amount of lost balls at each game or practice. The Lacrosse field at the Redwood Bowl is a picturesque setting that provides a unique atmosphere for a game or practice, but because of the dense undergrowth and forest surrounding the track, we currently lose an average of $250 in balls each semester. Additionally, the helmets the team supplies to its players are obsolete and discontinued by the manufacturer. This poses a significant hurdle for the team as recruiting efforts prove successful and the team grows. The club's roster has doubled in size over the last two years, and we no longer have enough helmets to supply the new, larger roster. In order to comply with league bylaws, the entire team must wear matching helmets, so to replace these outdated helmets, we'll have to place a bulk order and that would cost the team upwards of $6,000. This is a sum that we would typically have to slowly set aside a small portion of operating costs each year until we'd be able to afford them. However, your contribution will allow the team to avoid limping through the next several years while saving money and making do with broken or obsolete safety equipment.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support of the Cal Poly Humboldt Lacrosse Team. We look forward to continuing to represent the university with integrity and providing an opportunity for more students to discover the oldest sport in America and the fastest game on two feet.
