Story
There are many barriers to accessing and completing a quality education in Niger. Remember Niger’s Equipping for Success through Resource Centers programming aims to address one facet of the insufficient infrastructure barrier – the shortage of learning materials and resources.
The Kollo Girls’ School is in its second year of operation, with 39 students currently enrolled. The community created this school in response to a need to provide a safe environment for their girls to learn and thrive so that, in the long term, they can lead healthier lives and help their families and community.
This project seeks to ensure that the Kollo Girls School is equipped with a resource center. This programming is multi-faceted and provides the following:
- Computers and training for teachers on their use as classroom tools
- Learning tools, such as manipulatives, and the training for teachers on their benefits and use in the classroom
- RACHEL systems, where appropriate, to give teachers greater access to resources
- Physical space to house the resources and furnish those spaces (infrastructure)
The school population size is currently 40 students, with an anticipated annual increase of 30 girls each year until the school reaches full operational capacity from Kindergarten to 9th grade. Supporting this there are 5 staff members dedicated to various aspects of all the school operations. The age range of the children attending the school spans from 5 to 11 years old. Operating as a private institution, the school currently possesses an administration office along with 3 classrooms, in addition to restroom facilities.
