Story
Welcome to Kings Volunteers fundraising page!
We are embarking on a yearlong campaign to shine a spotlight on Kings Volunteer Services, engage with our volunteers and raise money for our home away from home.
You may not be aware but the volunteer service wouldnt be able to have the impact we have without the support of the charity which has been ongoing for nearly a decade. Their support enables us to maximise the patient experience and recruit and support our orange army of volunteers.
"It adds a personal touch to the department. Having someone who can add that little bit extra that other staff just do not have the time to do I think is really nice for the patient experience."
Recent achievements and plans for the future:
492 active volunteers have contributed 21,038 hours in the first half of the year.
Volunteers support in many ways, including the following areas:
Emergency Department, Vaccine Centres, Wards, particularly at mealtimes, Outpatient departments and Staff Wellbeing hubs , Front of House
In addition to the above, we have partnerships with Pets as Therapy, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and are continually bringing in new partners to expand our support offer to patients
The service is introducing a Trust wide programme, branded as Social Club with volunteers engaging patients across the wards in activities ranging from origami and card making, to music, drama, gardening and walking. Patients report high levels of boredom in our surveys so these engagement programmes aim to alleviate boredom of patients whilst in our care.
"The ED volunteers are invaluable colleagues, supporting our team to give the best we can to our patients. As a group, they have embraced our team and our patients and make a real difference to the most vulnerable."
Kings College Hospital Charity strives to make a difference to patients and their loved ones at our hospitals by supporting developments that go above and beyond what the NHS provides. Our aim is to assist in the delivery of a better experience and better results for the people who come to us in a time of need. We are dedicated to supporting life-changing care at Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Working with our volunteers, we are going to create new challenges every other month which you are welcome to challenge yourself with and hopefully, raise a little money too.
Each fundraising beneficiary and activity will come from one of our volunteers and the service team to support an area in the hospital that means a lot to them and we will be sharing the money raised directly between the nominated area with the remainder helping volunteer services improve patient experience.
In recognition of starting the drive, the first month is brought to us by Kirsty and Janet. We are planning to collectively walk 500 miles through the month of November. This is a great activity for your health and accessible for so many of us who often take advantage of that. Keep an eye out for an update in the volunteers cascades as Kirsty and Jane are keen to get a group together and walk in Ruskin park to continue their steps and encourage others to join in as well!
If you are interested in supporting us, please sign up here and download Strava for iPhone or Android for free to keep a track of your miles which will cumulatively add towards our total. We will announce the results of our efforts in December and announce our next challenge for January!
Kirsty's Story
"Hello, my name is Kirsty Mills and I work as a guide at Kings 2 days a week, after being in the care of Charles Polkey ward for 17 weeks. In the summer I organised an NHS tea party raising money for the ward and wanted to go one step further! Myself and a few other volunteers suggested we raise money for the hospital through a walking challenge and here we are! "
