Story
Since our arrival two weeks into Russia's full-scale invasion in Ukraine, we have been at the border in Przemyśl, Poland. Simultaneously, we have been working with friends in Kharkiv to fundraise and get vital supplies to them. We are acutely aware of how quickly the specific needs in both places can change. We have therefore decided to merge our two campaigns into one, in order to enable us to direct money where it is most needed, on the ground in real time.
In Przemyśl, this involves making sure people are able to get to their next destination as quickly as possible, and providing them with safe and secure accommodation away from the refugee camps where Covid and other diseases are rife. We also buy supplies: suitcases and power banks are currently the most in demand, but people rarely think of these when they send donations. We spend money on a wide variety of things here on the ground, where responsiveness, understanding, and human dignity are key.
The Kharkiv campaign started off as a social media post to send money to friends in the besieged eastern city, who were buying food and medicine for its most vulnerable residents. It has since expanded into a broader effort to supply Kharkiv with much of what it needs to resist the Russian assault. In the space of a few weeks, we have started building effective supply networks across Europe to deliver food, medicine and clothing to our friends at the Kharkiv Aid Office.
