Story
Keeping Abreast are registered charity based in Norfolk offering non-medical support to people affected by Breast Cancer. Founded back in 2007 by two Norwich-based Breast Cancer patients and their local Breast Reconstruction Nurse, we specialise in offering personalised support to every person. Being told you have breast cancer can be a very stressful and overwhelming time even before the discussions of breast reconstruction. This is a very big decision to make so we aim to provide the best support possible so the person can make the most informed choice. Talking to someone who has been in a similar experience or seeing real life surgery results can help with this decision. Just the fact of knowing you are not alone can make a positive difference, being part of a wider group gives everyone we support the forum to air any concerns or worries they may have and to support each other.
Our support is not a one off and can be over a number of years, even post-surgery people still benefit from the support as often the whole reconstruction process can take many months if not years. In addition to other support tools, we have support groups in various parts of the country offering face-to-face support from our support volunteers all of which are have their own breast cancer experience. Our support is offered to breast cancer patients and their support network.
I haven’t regretted the choice I made, I’m sure it’s been the right one for me, but without hearing and seeing the experiences of those at the meeting, I may not have been brave enough to go through with it."
Family and friends are amazing but they can’t understand what’s going through my mind at the moment."
