Story

Each year, Kyaninga Child Development Centre supports more than 3,000 children with disabilities in rural western Uganda. Without the life-changing therapy, rehabilitation, and education services we provide, children like Miracle would still be abandoned on a mat in the house, with no friends and no future.

Miracle was born with Spina Bifida, and her parents were told nothing could be done to help her; she would never walk, never go to school. Her parents were left feeling hopeless about any future. Instead, she remained at home, waiting for her brothers and sisters to return, excitedly talking about their school day - full of experiences she would never have.

This all changed the day she met the KCDC team. Suddenly there was hope and opportunity. Physiotherapists would help her strength and mobility, while occupational therapists would give her some independence. The special education teacher discovered a bright and enthusiastic learner hidden by shame, despair and long-time neglect.

When Miracle was told she could join Kyaninga Inclusive Model School (KIMS), her face lit up with a brilliant smile. She knew that this would change her life and her chances forever. With its inclusive ethos, KCDC is perfect for Miracle; its curriculum is tailored to her needs. Children are taught in small classes where teachers and therapists provide individual, focused support to ensure children thrive and learn.

However, many children live in poverty and cannot reach these services. With your help, more children with complex needs and disabilities can be given a future.
