Story
Developing the Kitchen Garden
KaisKids has been situated in the provinces for over 20 years. The aim was always to use the land to produce sustainable, home grown produce for the children. However, years of drought and flooding cycles, soil contamination due to the use of pesticides on neighbouring farms has made this all untenable.
KaisKids will be relocating to Phnom Penh in 2023 in order to provide better health and education opportunities for the children. This is also a golden opportunity to start a sustainable kitchen garden at the new site. The land at the back of the site has the potential to be developed into an area for raised beds, fruit trees, vertical planting and chickens. This area will help to teach the children sustainable and environmentally friendly farming methods and animal husbandry as well as providing fruit and vegetables for their food. Most importantly, it will provide the children with purposeful activities which will help their transition into their new home and surroundings supporting their mental health and wellbeing.
Currently the area needs clearing and a lot of preparation. We need to raise money to pay for: gardening tools plus a secure shed to house them; fruit tree saplings; raised beds; vegetable seeds; grass seeds to be planted in uncultivated areas to reduce soil erosion; chickens and a chicken coop.
