6 February 2023
We are deeply saddened by the news of a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit Gaziantep/Kahramanmaras provinces at 04:17 am (01:17 GMT) on 6 February 2023, and affected at least 10 provinces in southern Turkiye. The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks with the highest being of magnitude 7.5.
While the aftermath of this tragic event is still being assessed, we know that thousands of buildings have collapsed and the death toll is rising as powerful and aftershock earthquakes are continuously hitting the region. The region is also affected by extreme weather conditions which presents additional challenges to the survivors and rescue teams. We extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to all who have lost loved ones or have been affected by the earthquake.
Turkiye issued a level-4 alarm, which includes an international call for help. Many organisations are now mobilised to provide immediate relief in the form of food, shelter, water, and medicine to to help the areas that were hit by the massive earthquake.
We are launching the Kahramanmaras Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund to support civil society organisations working on the ground to provide immediate relief and medium to long term recovery to survivors of the earthquake.
We have mobilised more than GBP 60,000 via the Izmir Earthquake , Elazig Earthquake and the Refugee Relief Funds to civil society organisations including AKUT, Support to Life, Needs Map and Basic Needs Association in 2020. For this campaign, we will continue to work closely with representatives and support networks of Turkey Mozaik Foundation grantee partners to ensure that funds are directed to carefully selected organisations on the ground for maximum impact.
Thanks in advance for your generous contributions to our campaign. We will keep you informed with updates.
