Just Giving - In-Memory

Giving a gift in memory of someones life has great meaning and allows you to honour and remember their legacy. Many people choose to ask friends and family to make a donation to the Hospice in place of buying flowers for their loved one's funeral.

Story

Our specialist teams work together to provide free specialist palliative and end-of-life care services across the London Borough of Hillingdon and surrounding areas; this is done at the Michael Sobell inpatient unit in Northwood, and through our Hospice at Home services. We have a longstanding history in our community. The Michael Sobell inpatient unit opened in 1977, and Harlington Hospice was founded by a number of neighbours, led by Reg and Mary Hopkins, in 1984. Our teams work to ensure that people in our community experience a journey towards the end of their life that is comfortable, peaceful, and free from worry and pain.

The hospice care we provide isnt just about people experiencing a good death. We also provide respite care to loved ones and relief from challenging symptoms for people living with an advancing illness, so they can continue to live life in a way that feels meaningful to them. In the Michael Sobell inpatient unit over the last year, 48% of people who came to stay in the hospice went home, with the remaining 52% choosing to spend the last days of their life at the hospice.

Together, Harlington Hospice and the Michael Sobell Hospice also provide a Wellbeing Service which is tailored to the needs of each individual, taking into account their spiritual, psychological and physical needs. It is free of charge to the people who need us. This includes but isnt limited to lymphoedema treatment, Reiki healing, massage, and talking therapies for both people nearing the end of their life and their loved ones. We also run a Child and Adolescent Bereavement Service (CABS), to support young people through the difficulties of bereavement and family illness. Additionally, our Harlington Care team provides respite support and domiciliary care to people in need in our community.
