Story
This campaign supports 5 non-profit organizations with a common goal: to provide services to people on the move who face a severe lack of access to legal aid and justice.
As the border regime of Fortress Europe becomes more deadly and Member States unite behind an anti-migrant discourse, we have decided to unite against the exclusionary and draconian policies targeting displaced people and pledge a collective effort to challenge the existing status quo.
Your support will enable us to maintain our operations and collaborations, amplify the voices of those who are silenced, and contribute to our fight against injustice against people on the move.
Keep reading to find out who we each are and what we do.
Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASFF) - Samos Legal Centre Project
Avocats Sans Frontières France is a french non-profit organisation operating on the island of Samos since 2019 with the Samos Legal Centre project providing free and independent much-needed legal support to asylum seekers and refugees on the island.
Legal support is provided at every stage of the procedure, from registration to the second instance. In 2023 778 people were directly supported by ASFF by receiving an individual consultation. In the interests of accessibility, the office is open on a walk-in basis, but support is also provided close to the camp and remotely via our hotline, which receives an average of 50 messages a day.
Mobile Info Team
Mobile Info Team, established in 2016 in Idomeni near the North Macedonian border, is now based in Thessaloniki, Greece. The organisation provides vital information and assistance to refugees and asylum seekers throughout their asylum procedures. Their services include publishing regular content for over 68,000 Facebook followers, responding to more than 750 monthly inquiries in multiple languages, offering individual casework with in-house legal experts, and conducting advocacy efforts to highlight the challenges faced by people on the move in Greece.
Equal Legal Aid
Equal Legal Aid (ELA) is a non-profit organisation based in Thessaloniki, which provides free legal assistance and representation to asylum seekers during their asylum procedures in Northern Greece.
Since the start of its activities in September 2020, ELA has provided individual legal assistance and representation to 1,397 people from 51 countries. Assistance is provided at all stages of the asylum procedure, including registration and appeals. To address the challenges posed by the isolation of people in remote refugee camps, ELA also runs a hotline, through which 1,600 people have received advice on asylum procedures since January 2022.
Through litigation, advocacy and communication, ELA seeks to raise awareness of the struggles faced by exiles at Europe’s borders and to defend and promote their human rights.
Human Rights Legal Project (HRLP)
The Human Rights Legal Project is a legal aid organisation based in Samos, defending the fundamental rights of people on the move in Greece, and seeking accountability for state criminality at the EU border.
Fighting against the systematic criminalisation of migration, HRLP’s lawyers are deployed to assist prosecuted refugees and asylum seekers at the earliest stage of the criminal procedure, challenging border violence through a method that involves affected communities and individuals upon arrival.
Through holistic legal support, the organization aims to empower the displaced community to access the justice system and realise their human rights. HRLP’s diverse casework includes pushbacks, ungrounded ‘smuggling’ accusations, unlawful detention, denial of access to healthcare and public authority violence.
Legal Centre Lesvos
The Legal Centre Lesvos AMKE is a civil non-profit organisation registered in Greece and previously operative as a restricted fund under the auspices of Prism the Gift Fund (UK).
Since August 2016, we provide free and individual legal information, assistance and representation to migrants who arrived by sea to Lesvos, where our office is based. Besides this continuous and direct support, the Legal Centre also works towards collective justice and structural change as part of local and international movements, including through advocacy and strategic litigation: documenting violations of migrants’ rights and engaging in advocacy and strategic litigation to hold the Greek government, Member States of the European Union, and European institutions to account. In addition, we advocate for equal access to safe and legal routes of migration in Greece, Europe and globally.
