Story
Story and Appeal: Joanne died suddenly in August 2011 from kidney failure and pancreatitis, aged 54. After she gave up running her own business in 2005 and, whilst continuing to run the Woking Branch of Cats Protection, she worked part time for 5 years helping an American living in London running his charitable trust. This American was a Vietnam Green Beret Officer who served on long-range reconnaissance in Vietnam who subsequently went into banking and had a very successful career. Joanne much enjoyed working for this American and when Joanne died, he very kindly gave me £20,000 to set up a charity in her name. Being an ex Royal Green Jacket myself, our successor regiment, The Rifles, was created in 2007 and they suffered heavily in Iraq and Afghanistan with 62 Riflemen killed in action and over 300 with serious injuries including 31 who lost limbs. So Joannes fund was set up and initially helping those under the C4C appeal. Over the years I have had 2 musical jazz fundraising evenings at West Hill Golf Club with Jo Stilgo and Holly Penfield. In October 2021 The Rifles became the first British regiment to set up its own mental health etc programme (AARP) for anybody past and present who served with the Regiment. AARP now have up to 230 former Riflemen who will help anyone in need prior to receiving treatment under the NHS.
