Here are some words from Jan, who would like to share her deepest thanks for considering donating this Christmas:
Giving gifts at Christmas is a given. But to give this gift to research which would give 'Hope' and 'Treatment' to those suffering from a debilitating and aggressive cancer is incredibly precious. I am humbled by the decision you have all made to do just this. My beautiful Jan would be so proud of all of you.
Improved treatment for uterine leiomyosarcoma (uLMS) continues to be an urgent unmet need.
These cancers arise from smooth muscle cells of the wall of the uterus. Unfortunately, they respond poorly to currently available treatments and sadly, there is generally a poor outcome for patients regardless of how soon they are diagnosed.
Because these cancers are relatively rare, there is far less research than more common ones. However, with the generous support from relatives and friends of uLMS patients, scientists at Newcastle University have made substantial progress in defining and understanding some of the abnormal genes in uLMS cancer cells.
This work looks extremely promising, with researchers now able to use cells grown in culture to test a panel of drugs and novel drug combinations specifically targeted to exploit these abnormalities in uLMS cells.
We want to give people diagnosed with uLMS, and their family and friends hope that there is life after a uLMS diagnosis. Please join us in this fight by donating what you can to support further research here at Newcastle University.
