Together, we fight isolation. #isolationbrave
This is an unprecedented time, and our thoughts are with many, from amazing NHS staff to struggling businesses, people in isolation and more.
At the Deaf Academy, we understand isolation. In everyday life, our amazing Deaf children and young people are frequently isolated as they struggle with:
A lack of language (British Sign Language and English) and communication (95% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents and there is no financial support to teach parents sign language)
A lack of friends and social networks
A lack of access and understanding of the Deaf community and their Deaf identity
A lack of appropriate care and education
In these challenging times our vulnerable Deaf children and young people need the Deaf Academy more than ever. Whilst the developing situation may mean that our priorities shift and change, we are committed to putting our Deaf students first. As we change the ways we work to offer remote learning, additional British Sign Language support, and emotional support, we also want to support you.
We are developing ideas and activities for everyone to share at home, especially to help keep children occupied and learn British Sign Language (BSL). Follow our social media channels to find out more. Together, we fight isolation.
A positive future. If you are able, please help.
The Deaf Academy were due to open our amazing new Academy buildings on 20th April. Designed with Deaf people for Deaf people these buildings offer bespoke Deaf design to support visual communication, reduce isolation, and help our Deaf children and young people thrive Whilst the current situation means a delay, we remain positive about opening this amazing new facility for our students, when we are able.
The new Academy has only been possible with the support of many, raising vital funds to deliver a building and facilities that reduce isolation. Thank you.
But, with the postponement, cancellation or reduction of many fundraising activities and donations, the Deaf Academy is likely to lose over £100,000 due to the impact of Coronavirus.
Like many charities at this time, and, if you are able, we need your help. Fundraising that will ensure that we can open a fully kitted out new Deaf Academy, ready to reduce isolation and support our amazing Deaf students:
Host a Cake and a Cuppa event at home or set up a virtual event, with friends baking and share a virtual cuppa for a small donation
Make a one off donation perhaps the costs of your regular daily commute or cup of coffee
Watch out for our Virtual Colour Bomb event.......launching on social media channels
You can also lend your support by sharing our social content and signing up to our newsletter, or learning some BSL (British Sign Language) to help ensure Deaf people are less isolated, full stop.
