All of our outdoor activities are team events, and we place great emphasis on how individuals can work well together to complement each other’s strengths in a team. This team spirit allows the widest range of children to participate, and our progressive challenges grow as our children grow, developing skills, confidence and resilience.
We run Exe Valley Challenge, a 10 mile timed walk in the Exe Valley, competing in teams against teams from across the city and beyond. This is offered to participants from Year 2, and our Year 7s can take part in the senior challenge. From Y8 they can apply to take part in our Jurassic Coast Challenge, walking in one day from Lyme Regis possibly as far as Budleigh Salterton, a distance of 27 miles.
In Y9 children can start their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze programme, and also begin taking part in training for Ten Tors.
Ten Tors is a two day expedition on Dartmoor. Teams of six train all winter to be able to navigate, completely independently, across 35, 45 or even 55 miles on Dartmoor, wild camping overnight and carrying all the equipment they need to be self-sufficient.
In the future we would like to be able to offer opportunities to try out some watersports, such as canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and rowing.
Money raised in this ongoing campaign will be used to buy equipment to support those taking part. There are many barriers to taking part that children face when considering having a go. We do not want access to equipment or money to be one of them.
