Story
Idris was born in October 2020 and lives in Axminster, Devon. He was born at 30 weeks and due to the trauma of the emergency c section, Idris suffered damage to his brain which has been diagnosed as cerebral palsy with spastic diplegia. This impacts and restricts Idris' mobility meaning he is unable to stand unaided, walk or transition from different levels on his own. Physiotherapy really helps Idris, and there is a focus on helping him move his body in different ways, to challenge the signals that the brain is sending. Our aim is to work on building his leg strength so that he gains the skills to eventually be able to use a walking aid independently.
Unfortunately, the physiotherapy available through the NHS is not enough for him to be able to progress and strengthen. We pay for weekly private physiotherapy sessions at home. When Idris was diagnosed we began to research therapies and specialist equipment that would help make his life a little easier and help reach his goals. Although some of these are funded by the NHS, we will also need to purchase some independently if Idris is to have the chance he deserves to be as independent as possible. All of this, along with Idris’ weekly private physiotherapy sessions, comes at a great cost which unfortunately we are not able to cover fully.
Hydrotherapy also has so many benefits for Idris as well and the spasticity (stiffness) in his legs.
Idris loves to be outside to explore and play with other children. His time at preschool has really helped with this. Idris is able to move about independently by crawling, but this isn't often an option when we are outside which can make days out hard. Idris watches other children running around and we often wonder what goes through his head. It makes our hearts ache and would love for him to join in with other children with independence.
In the future, we are hopeful that Idris will be accepted for a life changing major operation called Selective Dorsal Rhitzotomy. This may be funded by the NHS but the recovery and aftercare required is expensive.
Thank you so much for your support and helping our amazing son Idris.
