Story
Climate chaos in South Sudan forced Adut to give her children dirty water. She knew it wasnt safe, but she had no choice.
We were in desperate need, Adut said. To look after my children, they had to drink the dirty river water.'
The River Makadh runs through Aduts village of Biet in north-west South Sudan and was the communitys only source of water. It is dirty and unreliable.
The river dries up during long periods of drought and floods during heavy rainfall, rising to dangerous levels and spreading contaminated water.
No mum should have to choose between dirty water or none at all. But for a long time, that impossible choice was a reality for Adut.
Not anymore. Adut now has access to a borehole near her home. That means clean water for her children to drink whatever the weather and peace of mind for a loving mum.
Thanks to people like you, Aduts community were able to build the borehole with support from Christian Aids local partner, SPEDP..
Now we get water from the hand pump. We dont send our children to the river, Adut said. The water from the hand pump is very good. Its disease free. We drink it with peace of mind.
While the borehole is lifechanging, there are still many challenges ahead for Aduts community. The borehole is being used by around three times more people than it should be. Clean water is in desperate need across the region.
Through your gift this Christmas we could help more mums facing impossible choices.
Your gifts could help communities build boreholes, so more mums can give their children clean water whatever the weather.
They could give mums the seeds, tools and training they need to rejuvenate flood-damaged land so their children can enjoy nutritious food.
They could give mums the money they need to start a small business like a tea shop or bakery, so they can afford to send their children to school.
Stand with mums this Christmas and help the next generation grow.
