Story
Thank you for your support so far
Over 480 generous supporters have helped raise over £19,000. This has enabled the iForge team to create and distribute over 5,000 face shields.
CareSleeves garments initiative
CareSleeves are a brand new range of reusable medical gowns for frontline health workers, made from textiles milled in the UK. Researchers are working towards making these gowns safe to wash and re-wear 100 times. Engineers from the University of Sheffield have played a key role in developing and testing prototypes for CareSleeves, and they are expected to be widely available by the end of April 2021.
Our Engineers' amazing work
Experts from a range of engineering disciplines are working together to rapidly manufacture face shields and distribute them to healthcare workers who may be exposed to COVID-19. the team have already delivered face shields to many local organisations, GP surgeries, pharmacies, hospices and care homes.
Today, our Engineers are collaborating with designers, medics, manufacturers and public health specialists to create these reusable garments for health workers. These tunic-style garments will be more comfortable to wear, cheaper and more environmentally friendly than single-use garments which are currently used in most settings. Innovative British company Torola are providing the fabric, who are using new technology to bond water-repellent coatings to fibres in a way that reduces polluting waste.
Dr Pete Mylon has led the team of engineers from Sheffield in these initiatives:
At CareSleeves we're trying to design garments that will help make our healthcare workers' day that little bit easier and give them one less thing to worry about. Having worked with local healthcare workers when producing PPE in our iForge, I jumped at the opportunity to be part of a team inventing these viable washable sleeved garments
How your donation will help
Your donation will help offset the manufacturing costs for the protective garments. A donation of £15 today will enable production and distribution of a durable garment for 50 wears to a UK care setting.
Thank you so much for your support at this critical time.
