Story
Please support the collaboration between Covenant House California and HortCulture - a creative + therapeutic workforce development program dedicated to supporting 18-24 year old youth experiencing homelessness in the Bay Area.
As an official partner of Covenant House California, we’ve worked hand in hand to provide paid internships to young people staying in Covenant House shelters since the summer of 2020.
Through our job training internships, youth run a small business in the Bay Area selling houseplants, plant related merchandise, and 3D printed pottery. On weekends, we operate out of a mobile trailer and park outside of local businesses. In September of 2022, we partnered with the co-working company, WorkBistro, to set up our first retail space in their co-working environment, allowing interns to increase their hours and pay to help run the business.
We exist to support youth with community engagement, job readiness, financial literacy, short term economic opportunities, a resume entry, a professional reference, and access to creative + therapeutic outlets for improved mental health.
We aim to create a therapeutic environment that reduces symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and trauma for our interns through interactions with plants + creative activities.
Our work exposes interns to entrepreneurial concepts, business principles, and software such as Canva, Excel, Slack, the Square POS system, Potterware 3D printing software, Instagram marketing, the Google suite, etc.
