Story
We are reaching out to you today on behalf of the thousands of families we support at Home Start Cymru, a charity dedicated to supporting families across Wales.
We are launching our School Readiness Appeal, and we are appealing to you for your assistance.
In Wales, many families are facing difficult choices when it comes to providing school uniforms for their children. The cost of living has increased, and parents are having to prioritise necessities such as heating their homes and putting food on the table. Unfortunately, this means that purchasing school uniforms has become a financial burden for these families and we are experiencing an increase in the need for support.
Our conversations and research have revealed that the average cost of school uniform for primary-school children in Wales is a staggering £287 per year. For families already struggling to make ends meet, this becomes an unaffordable expense that affects their children's educational experience and sense of belonging.
I can’t afford to buy a school jumper at the moment. The cost of living has gone up, and I am having to prioritise heating the house and putting food on the table. There is no extra money. Sophie, A Mum from Powys
By supporting our School Readiness Appeal, you can make a significant difference in the lives of these families, throughout Wales.
Imagine being a child going to school without the proper uniform. It serves as a means of fitting in, feeling accepted, and having a sense of pride in their school community. When children are unable to adhere to dress codes due to financial constraints, they can feel isolated, different, and may even face bullying or discrimination. Our experience has shown that children without uniform can even find themselves being excluded affecting not only their education but the rest of their lives.
Your involvement in our appeal will help bridge this gap. By providing financial support or donating new school uniforms, you are ensuring that children in vulnerable situations are given the opportunity to participate fully in their education without the added stress of feeling different or excluded.
