Story
HOMELINK is a unique volunteer-led charity that has been helping people into homes in the Lewes District for almost 25 years.
We provide interest-free loans for landlord deposits and advanced rent so that those in crisis can move into homes rather than sleep rough or endure vulnerable living conditions. We also provide small grants to referred clients which helps people moving into a new home with the cost of essential household items.
By providing financial assistance to those not eligible for statutory support, along with key practical assistance, we prevent homelessness and the escalation of traumatic circumstances. This enables clients to not just survive their difficulties but turn their lives around. We help individuals manage existing debts, refer to the CAB for budgeting assistance, and signpost to vital mental health and employment services. Our small, agile team can also process loans quickly to help clients secure homes in our area’s competitive rental market.
The positive impact of HOMELINK’s intervention on clients’ mental health and long-term outcomes is profound. For those on the brink to have contact with a service that is personal and caring is a transformative experience.
HOMELINK’s clients are some of the most vulnerable and marginalised within our community. We assist those coping with chronic health issues, redundancy, and emotional crises as well as those leaving hospital, prison or the care system.
I am a single parent with a young child and never imagined that I would be facing the prospect of becoming homeless. I was totally overwhelmed with stress and anxiety when I first contacted HOMELINK and it was so comforting to speak to somebody who genuinely cared, wanted to help and actually offered practical solutions to the difficulties I was facing. Thanks to HOMELINK I was able to secure a loan in order to cover my rental costs on a property for my daughter and I to move into. … really went above and beyond to help me with this and I will be forever grateful for all his support and kindness. My little girl and I move into our new home next week and without a doubt this would not have been possible without the loan and additional support HOMELINK provided.
With the ongoing cost of living crisis it’s a bleak picture financially for many, but especially so for the vulnerable HOMELINK clients and their families who, daily, now must make difficult decisions such as whether to pay rent, heat their homes or eat because their incomes do not fully cover living costs.
Some individuals and families we support have faced considerable hardship following domestic abuse, relationship breakdowns, disability and physical or mental illness. It can be very traumatic for them to have finally secured a roof over their head only to find themselves without the essentials to make it into a home.
HOMELINK offers a hand up, not a handout, to those needing help.
