Introducing HIPEC: A Groundbreaking Advancement in Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is rapidly emerging as the gold-standard treatment for ovarian cancer. With updated NICE guidelines now supporting its use, hospitals across the UK—such as Cardiff, Norfolk, and Norwich—are already leading the way in rolling out this innovative approach.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital is poised to join this national movement. By prioritising the necessary groundwork, we aim to treat our first patients as early as March 2025.

How Does HIPEC Work?

For ovarian cancer patients, the treatment journey includes three cycles of chemotherapy, followed by a major surgical procedure to “debulk” any remaining cancer. At this critical stage, HIPEC is introduced: a heated chemotherapy solution is directly applied to the abdomen during surgery, targeting residual cancer cells with precision.

The Impact:

Research demonstrates that adding HIPEC to standard debulking surgery improves disease-free survival rates by an additional 5-10%. This gives patients a better chance of prolonged remission and, crucially, enhanced quality of life.

Our Vision for Liverpool

Liverpool Women’s Hospital patients and clinicians are at the forefront of this groundbreaking work. However, to make HIPEC treatment a reality for our patients, we urgently need to fund a key piece of equipment: the Heat Pump—costing £60,000.

This is more than just a piece of equipment; it is the foundation for a transformative approach to ovarian cancer care in Liverpool. By supporting this project, you will directly contribute to improving survival outcomes and ensuring Liverpool Women’s remains a leader in innovative cancer care.

We need to make this vital treatment accessible to patients in our region. Your support will make a life-changing difference.
