Story

Highgate Wood is a beautiful ancient woodland near central London.

Predominantly an oak and hornbeam wood, Highgate Wood is also home to numerous other tree and shrub species which have self-seeded there. Small areas are fenced off to encourage natural regeneration.

The rich diversity of wildlife in Highgate Wood has been well researched and it's moth survey is now the longest-running in the UK.

So far, they have recorded:

- over 900 invertebrate species

- over 400 moth species

- 353 fungi species and counting

- 70 bird species

- seven bat species

Many of these species rely on habitats found only in the complex and developed ecosystems of ancient woodlands like Highgate Wood.

As well as a football and cricket field, Highgate Wood offers visitors a supervised children's playground, a café and an information centre.
