Story

This year we have been working harder than ever, to ensure families living with terminal illness and bereavement continue to get the best possible care, comfort and support throughout COVID-19. We can only continue to care with the help of our community.

How your support will make a difference

Paul Scott, from Bedale, talks about the brilliant care and support his wife received from Herriot Hospice Homecare team, in the months before her death.

We had the Herriot team visiting from February to May and they were absolutely brilliant, not just the care, but their tips and advice and support for us all. One gave me the idea of videoing Anne when she was having a good day, to make new memories and share with the family. Thanks to their care and support, we were even able to go on a couple of little outings, for a drive and a coffee.

Anne had two milestones she wanted to achieve and with all the support, she was able to achieve them both. The first was her goddaughters 21st birthday on March 13. We were able to celebrate at home and it meant a great deal to everyone. The other important milestone was the renewal of our wedding vows on our 28th wedding anniversary. One of the healthcare assistants helped Anne put her dress on so she looked her best. Our local curate came to the house to officiate at the ceremony, attended by close friends and family.

Anne and I are both radiologists and weve worked with enough people to know that Herriot has the best carers! By the end, we had the care team coming in four times a day. As well as being hyper professional, and skilled, they were lovely people, with laughs and jokes, and Anne looked forward to their visits.

This festive season, we're asking YOU to show you Care for Christmas, hold a virtual office party, don a cosy Christmas jumper or donate in lieu of Christmas cards- it's up to you.

£800

£800 could help our HOME service run for a full day this Christmas. Since the start of coronavirus, more people than ever need and want - to be cared at the end of life in the safety and comfort of their own homes and we want to help meet this need for more people this December. Our specialist HOME service has seen a significant increase in demand for this expert, personalised care. To help us to provide the best possible care for people at this difficult time, we need to ensure we have enough healthcare assistants, transport and resources available to support this need.

£300

£300 could help keep our new community support helpline Hear to Help - running over the festive season. This Christmas is set to be particularly tough for people due to restrictions, which means that usual support systems, events and traditions may be absent and people may feel increased levels of worry, anxiety and isolation in this new Covid 19. Your donation could support our helpline to continue to be there over the festive season to offer vital support and help.

£28

£28 could help provide one vital homecare visit over the Christmas period to someone at the end of their life. Since the start of the pandemic, more people than ever need and want - to be cared for at the end of life in the safety and comfort of their own homes. Your donation could help ensure we can provide more visits for more people this Christmas.
