Story
The Bentley Pulpit (so named because it was designed by J.F. Bentley, the architect of Westminster Cathedral) was part of our Cathedral for over a hundred years until its removal in 2005, when the sanctuary was reordered. At the time it was carefully dismantled and put into storage pending its return to the Cathedral as part of a new decorative scheme. The present scheme by our Cathedral Architect makes use of the beautiful late Victorian mosaic and some of the alabaster panels that together formed the structure of the original pulpit. These will now be incorporated within a specially designed cabinet of English Oak, and thereby restored as a key element in the Cathedrals artistic heritage.
The new memorial is to be located in the north transept to the right-hand side of the large crucifix.
Bishop Marcus has proposed that the project forms a memorial dedicated to Mgr. Canon Peter McGuire Dean of the Cathedral (1981-2003).
More details, including a digital copy of the flyer for the project are available on the Diocese of Leeds Website.
