Building for a New Beginning
Swan Support started in 2015, operating from a temporary base. Now having recently been offered a permanent location, help is needed to build a new bespoke centre for the care of these majestic birds, giving us the opportunity to rehabilitate over 1000 swans every year.
This centre will provide us with all the facilities required to treat swans in a secure and quiet space, surrounded by the natural beauty of a lake. There they can recover under our care, until they are ready to be released back into the wild. A fully equipped treatment room will be available for our vet to use, avoiding extra trips. Indoor pens, with heat lamps will give badly injured swans the space they need to recuperate, whilst outdoor pens will prepare them for their eventual release.
In addition there will be facilities and open days and the Trustees dedicated to an educational outreach programme working with the local communities and organisations, offering insights into the lives of swans and evoking an interest in the natural world.
It is a sobering reality that swans, like much of our local wildlife, require our help. Whether it be from injuries as a result of human behaviour (e.g. pollution, fishing tackle), climate change, or the pressures of life on the river, they suffer in silence. Sadly, the number of dog attacks and shootings are on the increase. In addition this winter the avian population in general has been devastated by Avian Influenza, with many swans in this area having died
These beautiful birds have given us much pleasure over the years, now they need our support more than ever
