Story

Hugh is a 15-year-old young man who loves rock music and heavy metal. He enjoys going to gigs, listening to music and playing his beloved guitars. Hugh's favourite things to watch are anime and musicals. He loves spending time outside in the fresh air, especially with his slightly bonkers Springer Spaniel dog, Barney.

Hugh was born with a condition called FoxG1 syndrome, a disorder so rare there are only about 1200 diagnosed cases worldwide. This has caused Hugh to have profound and multiple disabilities, complex health needs and life-threatening seizures. He requires round the clock care and full support to access all aspects of day-to-day life.

Yet, Hugh lives his life to the full, with unparalleled joy and enthusiasm. Despite multiple hospital admissions and surgeries, his resilience always enables him to bounce back with a smile on his face.

We are fundraising for a new wheelchair for Hugh. The Permobil F5 Corpus is a power chair that will not only enable Hugh’s friends and family to take him to lots of new places, but will, for the first time ever, give Hugh the chance to independently move his own chair. In addition, the chair can rise into a standing position so that Hugh can see the world at a whole new level. Not only is this important in terms of his long-term physical health, but it also allows him to experience the things many of us take for granted; standing up to cheer when his brother scores a goal, standing during his favourite song at his next gig.

The chair will last Hugh for many years to come and will bring him freedom, a sense of independence and a chance to see the world at a different height.

7.5% of all donations to Tree of Hope in relation to this appeal will be allocated to the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope to cover our core operating costs.

If we raise insufficient funds, or surplus funds, they will be used, if appropriate, to fund support for Hugh's needs in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objectives. If, in those circumstances, we are unable to use all or part of the funds for the benefit of Hugh, any funds that cannot be used will be transferred to be used for the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope.
