Story

Ethan is a bright, energetic seven-year-old boy growing up in London. He loves to climb, to explore, and to experience the world around him in his own unique way. Ethan was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in May 2021, and every single day his family pours their hearts into helping him thrive — often against extraordinary odds.

Ethan is non-verbal. He cannot yet tell his parents when he is hungry, when he is frightened, or when he is in pain. He cannot call out if he is in danger. Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) is not a luxury for Ethan - it is a lifeline. And right now, his family needs help to access the Speech and Language Therapy sessions he desperately needs.

Why Speech and Language Therapy Matters

For children like Ethan, early and intensive Speech and Language Therapy can be transformative. Without it, children who are non-verbal are at higher risk of frustration, anxiety, and behaviours that challenge their safety - simply because they have no reliable way to communicate their needs.

With the right SaLT support, Ethan could learn to:

Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools such as picture boards or voice-output devices

Signal basic needs — hunger, pain, discomfort, fear

Engage more meaningfully with family members, teachers, and peers

Reduce frustration-driven behaviours that put him at risk

Build foundations for greater independence and safety awareness

Ethan is already known to a Speech and Language Therapist through the NHS, and his school is committed to supporting his development. However, NHS waiting times and resource limitations mean that the frequency and intensity of therapy he needs simply cannot be provided through statutory services alone. Private Speech and Language Therapy would help bridge this critical gap - giving Ethan a stronger chance to be understood, stay safe, and reach his potential.

7.5% of all donations to Tree of Hope in relation to this appeal will be allocated to the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope to cover our core operating costs.

If we raise insufficient funds, or surplus funds, then the funds will be used, if appropriate, to fund support for our child’s needs in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objects. If in those circumstances we are unable to use all or part of the funds for the benefit of our child in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objectives, then any funds that cannot be used will be transferred to be used for the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope.
