Story
"Help Ellis Carey Please." This is what Ellis says when he needs help with his mobility.
Ellis is aged 4 from York. He is such a sweet child. He loves interacting with people and makes friends whenever he leaves the house. He reaches out to people with a friendly wave and a "hi" followed by an introduction of himself. He will then ask, "what’s your name?" His memory is great as he never forgets a name to a face.
Ellis was born on his due date in York hospital. It was a traumatic birth and resulted in birth injuries. He was born with the cord around his neck, and unconscious requiring resuscitation breaths.
We were unaware of any health issues until the age of two. It was picked up on at a routine health check appointment that Ellis was not meeting milestones. This along with his struggles to walk sparked further investigations.
Ellis was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy spastic diplega and global development delay to include speech, motor and language. Delay is the key word here. His speech did come along with a lot of singing too. From starting school his language is rapidly improving.
His motor skills are not improving. They are worse as he grows. His muscle tone and the spasticity is getting tighter, while his hip is being forced out of its socket and is at risk of being dislocated. His feet twist so much when he walks they are nearly in a backwards position. We have tried orthotics, Baclofen and Botox without success. His only option now to be free from spasticity is to have SDR surgery. This will free him of the tightness that pulls and twists his legs. His current walking gait is a scissor gait with crouch both feet in-turned and toe walking on both aswell.
He cannot walk unaided without falling his full length but this doesn’t stop him trying. It makes us sad seeing him fall to the floor so frequently.
Post surgery Ellis will require a minimum of 24 months vital Physio to get his muscles going.
Thank you
