Story
Someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes and over 3,500 Croydon residents have a dementia diagnosis. Each year, half of all people living with dementia can expect to be hospitalised.
We are fundraising for a new dementia garden dementia-friendly care environment for older people at Croydon University Hospital.
With your help we will transform the current space within the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit which was previously a children’s playground.
“This project will make a big difference to the health and wellbeing of dementia patients. The dedicated outdoors space will help to deliver a range of clinical benefits for patients, such as reduced pressure ulcers as well as improved recovery, both physically and psychologically."
Dr Nima Hashemi, Consultant Physician in Elderly Care
Donations will create a new outdoors space which will benefit a range of older patients. Funding will be used for:
• Capital works including groundworks such as drainage
• Fencing and lighting
• Furniture including seating and tables
• Ensuring the space is accessible for patients with disabilities
• Planters, sensory plants, herbs and green walls
Sharling Bovell, Lead Nurse for Dementia Care, adds:
“For someone with dementia, being taken to hospital can be incredibly distressing. On top of any physical pain, there’s the confusion of not knowing where you are, or why you’re there. Having a beautiful green space within easy reach for elderly patients will bring so many physical and psychological benefits.
In 2019-20, half of all people with dementia in Croydon were hospitalised at least once
