Special and unique.
Astley Church in North Warks was built in 1343 and is a Grade 1 listed building. It was built as a Collegiate Church by Sir Thomas Astley so monks and priests would sing for the souls of his family. It was a magnificent building, about 185 feet long and full of many beautiful historic treasures. Due to the theft of lead from the central tower by the dreadful deeds of Adrian Stokes (Astley Castle household), the spire collapsed into the church building causing severe damage c1555. The Church is now one fifth of its former size. Astley has past links with medieval royalty, the Grey family, as in Elizabeth Woodville, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth of York. In 1607 Astley Church was thankfully restored by Sir Richard Chamberlayne into the fascinating parish church we can visit today. It is still an active place of worship and is the Astley village parish church.
History cannot be lost.
Astley Church has undergone successful restoration projects, including to the church bells, the church organ and conservation of the post reformation wall paintings. Important work needs to continue and the church tower and its windows are the next project in great need of our attention and dedication. We need to raise at least £300.000. We need your help.
