At 91 years old, Dorothy has been having to choose between eating or heating, struggling to afford to both. Her neighbours noticed she was looking thinner and frailer, so they called Age UK South Glos for help.

Our team went to visit Dorothy, bringing with them a warm pack that included a heated blanket and an oil-filled radiator. When we handed Dorothy the items, she burst into tears. She explained that she had been forced to choose between heating and eating, and she feared she was becoming a burden.

“I thought people hated me because I was old,” Dorothy said.

This is not an unusual issue, too many older people are having to make the choice of heating or eating. This is 2024 in South Gloucestershire!
