Story
Hearing loss is the second largest disability in the UK, with around 12 million people or one in five of the adult population suffering from hearing loss greater than 25 db (decibels).
With a population of over half a million, East Sussex has over 116,000 hearing impaired people. This figure, unfortunately also bucks the national one in five statistic, as the disability affects older age groups proportionally greater and the county has a large elderly demographic.
People regularly report how they have long waits for GP referrals to NHS audiology, then face wait times of over three months before an initial appointment is offered.
By providing audiology screening services the charity can help reduce this back log, fill the gap and take the pressure off overstretched and understaffed primary and secondary care providers.
Having a customised (ambulance style) vehicle, The Hearing Hopper giving ramp/easy step access, heating and lighting will enable the charity to offer various services on board, throughout the whole county. These will include audiology screening, hearing aid maintenance services, assistive equipment advice, information, education and support.
