Story

Almost two-fifths of children in the North East grow up in poverty - more than 11 children in every classroom of 30, and that number is continuing to rise.

Hand Of is an arts and education charity dedicated to supporting the education of disadvantaged children and young people. With your help, we can increase the number of children we work with, to make a long-lasting impact on their lives and their futures.

- £20 enables one disadvantaged child to take part in one of our five day long projects.

- £100 can pay a workshop assistant for three workshops, so the children have more one-to-one support.

- £250 could enable us to take 30 children on a unique trip to Newcastle University or Northumberland National Park.

- £1000 will pay for healthy lunches for 50 children, for two weeks during our summer school.

Every donation, no matter how small, can make an enormous difference to a child’s life.

We have a special member of Hand Of to thank for getting us moving: our 2023 Young Artist in Residence, Jamie.

We first met Jamie when he was 15, and he’s taken part in numerous Hand Of projects as well as our Number Nine Artist in Residence programme. In his own words: “My time with Hand Of has been what many would call, ‘superbular’. During my time with Hand Of I have learnt skills about piano, composition and life. It’s been one of the greatest things I’ve ever participated in and I’m so grateful for everything I have learnt from them.”

Jamie is now 18 and has become a dextrous and disciplined pianist and composer, and has an exciting future ahead of him, including further study and lots of performing!

Jamie will go to University this September, but will remain involved with Hand Of, assisting on our projects and and inspiring other children and young people through performances with Hand Of.

Together with Jamie, the Hand Of team wanted to do something to bolster our mission to alleviate the negative impacts that can come from growing up with disadvantage and poverty.

So, Jamie, and four of the Hand Of team - Rob, Lou, Ian and Millie - are running to raise £1000 for every mile of the race!

Please help us reach our goal and transform more young lives in the North East.

Thank you for your support - we’ll see you at the finish line!
