Story
The Hammersley Hammers are running, walking and cycling 1000 km to raise awareness and funds for Hammersley Homes, a charity that will provide a home for life for adults with enduring mental illness.
Chronic underfunding of the mental health sector since the introduction of Care in the Community has meant that the quality of that care is variable and inconsistent. The impact of this is unnecessary suffering, loneliness, unhappiness and isolation.
This also creates a huge burden on public services. Housing those with incurable mental illness in high quality, safe, secure and supported housing would save the taxpayer a potential £38 million per year.
The shocking truth is that mental illness is estimated to account for at least a quarter of the country's burden of disease. And yet it receives just one tenth of the NHS funding. The mental health sector is in crisis. And this will undoubtedly become much worse in the aftermath of COVID-19.
Hammersley Homes will provide safety, security, comfort and friendship to these adults. It will reduce their suffering; keep them out of hospital; keep them out of trouble with the law; and relieve financial pressure on the police, mental health trusts and housing associations.
By kindly sponsoring us today you are helping us to help those with incurable mental illness. But not only that. We also invite you to join our team! If you would like to run, walk or cycle with us remotely on or around August 1st, whatever the distance, please join the Hammersley Hammers and raise money for Hammersley Homes. To do so, please scroll up and hit the orange 'Start fundraising' button.
Every mile counts and every penny counts. Help us to raise £10,000 by running, walking and cycling 1000 km!
