Story

A vibrant network of lunch clubs serving nutritious meals to Hackney's older residents (55+). There are 12 clubs serving lunch to the borough's diverse communities, including Vietnamese, Caribbean, Kurdish, Chinese and Cypriot groups. The lunch clubs help to decrease isolation and improve health, wellbeing and connection.

Some of our lunch clubs began serving lunches in the 1980s with Holly Street Luncheon Club on Queensbridge Road dating back to 1975.

The clubs invite older people to get out and about, eat well and connect with others, thus reducing social isolation and loneliness and improving quality of life. Members in the clubs are regularly invited to influence the design and delivery of the service they receive. Lunch clubs are financially supported by LB Hackney and contract managed by Hackney CVS but their funding doesn't cover current cost of living challenges.

Many older people have been impacted by the pandemic and are now being hit by increasing fuel and food costs. Hackney's lunch clubs are more important than ever; providing warmth, food and connection.

Hackney's network of lunch clubs is appealing to local residents and businesses to support these vital services. We are aware that money is tight for all of us now but would really appreciate your contributions. Our current fundraising goals are for the following:

> £3,000 for essential kitchen equipment - a new industrial oven for Holly Street lunch club to enable them to cook fresh/nutritious food from scratch again.

> £3,000 for additional funds for all 12 lunch clubs to offer activities (art classes, exercise classes etc.) to isolated older people. This would allow £250 per lunch club.

Volunteering opportunities:

Our Lunch Clubs are always looking for volunteers, contact the Lunch Clubs directly to volunteer your interest, find the lunch clubs details in our leaflet (link).

Where is your nearest lunch club?

Lunch clubs are an essential part of Hackney and so important to residents. We need your support to keep their doors open and ovens on.

These Hackney Lunch Clubs are coordinated by Hackney CVS, registered charity no 1069736. Hackney Giving is the local giving fund at Hackney CVS and is supporting this fundraising appeal for the lunch clubs.
