WHERE WE STARTED

In 2004, to meet the needs of their faith, the families came together once a month in the homes of individual members of the community for Sukhamni Sahib Ji path (prayers), kirtan (devotional singing) and Guru Ka Langar.

As the community continued to steadily grow, it became clear that homes were no longer suitable for accommodating larger congregations and the monthly meetings then took place in the Cadet Hall (Crawley Hill), in Camberley.

From the very start it was obvious that the facilities in this hall did not meet the needs of the community e.g. inadequate parking, inefficient heating etc. Being a shared facility, a great deal of time and effort was required to prepare the hall to the standard (of cleanliness) needed to receive the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This was unsustainable.

Camberley Sikh Association (CSA) formed in 2005 in response to the growing needs of an ever increasing Sikh population.

In 2010, with the support of Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC), CSA managed to secure an agreement to rent the Ian Goodchild Centre (IGC) for the sum of £100 per day, on the first Sunday of every month. In January, CSA arranged an annual Akhand Path (3 day event), at the cost of £300. With donations from the Sangat (congregation), these costs were manageable at that time, but it was always known that a time would come something permanent will be needed...
