Story
Join the Guide Dogs 90 Appeal this October as we celebrate 90 years of helping people with sight loss live the life they choose.
The UKs first guide dog partnership qualified in October 1931. Since then, your support has helped us transform the lives of thousands of blind and partially sighted people, through a range of services. But we must do more.
Your Guide Dogs 90 Appeal fundraiser can be any 90 themed activity you like. The money you raise will help us remain committed to supporting people with sight loss now, and for the next 90 years..
The impact of losing your sight is the same now as it was 90 years ago. Its terrifying and its isolating. Terry, from Baildon in Yorkshire, was diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes at a young age. Later, he started to get bleeds in his eyes, and in 2019 Terry registered as blind (severely sight impaired).
I was really struggling because I've always been fiercely independent. I thought my sight loss meant I couldn't do anything that I enjoyed doing. But I started to find out that losing your sight doesn't mean losing your life. I can have a full enjoyable, fulfilling and wonderful life and achieve the things I want to do, just by learning to do it differently.
I describe being partnered with my guide dog Spencer - my knight in shining black armour - as the first day of the rest of our lives. He's been the last missing piece in getting my life back and I feel like myself again. My partner says its like having the old Terry back.
Without help, people like Terry are likely to encounter unemployment, depression, loneliness, and financial insecurity. But with help, they can be who they want to be. We provide a range of life-changing services and are working hard to reach many more people with sight loss. But we need your support.
