Story
Having access to health care is a right for everyone. In December, Bridge of Life will return to Guatemala with a team of 6 volunteers to identify and raise awareness about the causes of CKD, as well as educate communities on prevention strategies to slow the progression of kidney disease by targeting its major culprits, hypertension and diabetes. Our goal is to reach more than 500 people.
The plan:
As part of a larger research project to investigate Mesoamerican nephropathy, commonly referred to as CKDnT (chronic kidney disease of nontraditional causes), volunteers will screen 100s of adults in and around La Democracia. CKDnT is a fatal progressive loss of kidney function and mainly affects agricultural workers in developing countries.
Train 30 local Community Health Workers, doctors and nurses about CKD prevention, giving them tools and resources to effectively implement sustainable kidney care programs throughout their communities.
Spend a day with kidney donors providing labs and health education in Guatemala City.
Join Bridge of Life and our volunteer team as we work to identify unknown causes of kidney disease as well as fight to slow the progression of the disease through education and prevention.
Bridge of Life's vision is a world where all human beings have access to quality healthcare. Your support will make that a reality for hundreds of people in Guatemala.
