Story
The DREAM mentorship program is a club that has had active mentors since 2005 working with the Birchwood Manor, a low income community in Milton, Vermont. It is a part of a non profit that creates programming for children K-12 to receive peer support and resources outside of their community. The purpose of the DREAM program is to close the opportunity gap by giving 1-on-1 mentorship to kids growing up in low income housing. It helps to get kids on a college campus to help inspire them and allows them to participate in fun activities around Burlington that they might have not gotten the opportunity to do otherwise. Its purpose is to also build a community between Champlain College and the greater Burlington area. Check out our video!
Our goal is to raise funds to be able to provide the kids in our programming with essentials they need for the winter. This includes coats, snow boots/shoes, hats, gloves etc. We have noticed that not every kid has access to these items and we want to offer families support as a program. We would also disperse some of the funds into our end of the year trip. Last semester we were able raise money to take the kids to Six Flags in Massachusetts. For many kids this was their first time out of state. As a club we would love to continue to provide the kids new opportunities and experiences.
