Story
Go Green with CAFOD! This can be done in many ways, but how about Go cycling, go veggie and go plastic-free and then making a donation or getting sponsored? In this way we can shine a light on some of the causes of climate change while doing our bit to guard God's creation.
You can take on any challenge that you like. Maybe you could give up the car and cycle instead? What about having a veggie day, week or month? Avoiding buying plastic for a week may well be the biggest challenge of all! If you want more details of the challenge, please click Go Green with CAFOD!
Through this challenge you'll be inviting donations to support people around the world who are fighting poverty caused by climate change, as well as taking part in an action which is making a difference to the climate crisis.
Ivanilde and her community live in Porto Seguro, a small area of the Amazon rainforest bordered on all sides by cattle pasture. Ivanilde has the legal right to live and work on the land and the responsibility to only carry out sustainable fruit and nut harvesting that doesn't cause further harm to the forest.
Unfortunately, seasonal burning of land is standard practice around the Porto Seguro area as cattle ranchers clear the pasture so it can regrow again, as well as setting fires to create new pasture. These fires are difficult to control, especially in windy conditions, so they can often spread accidentally to other areas. Climate change is making very dry seasons more common and so this increases the fire risk for people like Ivanilde.
