Transformative Treatment Leads Ricardo on a Path to Recovery
Last year, 11-year-old Ricardo Alvarado was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after what seemed like a simple cough rapidly worsened.
Following months of intense chemotherapy, his only hope for recovery was a life-saving bone marrow transplant. With no full donor match available, his older sister Melissa became his donor through a half-match, made possible by advanced transplant techniques that are part of the ongoing research at Loma Linda University.
Today, Ricardo is five months post-transplant and on the path to recovery. Gifts given on GivingTuesday in support of pediatric cancer care initiatives help patients like Ricardo receive the leading-edge treatments and the compassionate care they need to heal.
