Story
Celebrated journalist and Sky News Chief Presenter Gillian Joseph will trek Scotland's iconic West Highland Way from 5-12 May 2026, raising vital funds for Black Women Rising, a charity that supports, advocates for, and provides a safe community for women of colour living with a cancer diagnosis.
The route begins in Milngavie, just outside Glasgow, and spans nearly 100 miles through some of Scotland's most breathtaking Highland landscapes, finishing in Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, a truly remarkable undertaking.
Gillian is taking on this trek to bring greater awareness to Multiple Myeloma and its disproportionate impact on the Black community. As she journeys across the Highlands, she aims to highlight a condition that is two to three times more common in Black people yet remains widely under-discussed.
Through this challenge, she hopes to spark important conversations, encourage wide understanding, and inspire people to support the cause by following her journey and making donations.
Until now, Black Women Rising has focused much of its work on supporting Black women affected by breast cancer. However, in response to growing demand from its membership, the organisation is expanding its reach.
With the funds raised, Black Women Rising will begin developing new support groups and initiatives for those diagnosed with blood cancers, including Multiple Myeloma, ensuring that more people receive the tailored support, community and resources they need.
I want to do this West Highland Way trek to raise awareness of Myeloma. It is the most common blood cancer in the Black community and sadly my sister was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma three years ago. There is no cure at present, but I would love for more work to be done to bring greater awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease to the Black community. I would like to walk for my sister and all those who can't.." Gillian Joseph, Sky News broadcaster
"At Black Women Rising, we exist to ensure that no Black woman faces cancer alone. Gillian's incredible courage in taking on the West Highland Way is a powerful reminder of why this work matters so deeply. We are beyond grateful for her support and dedication to our community." Leanne Pero MBE, Founder, Black Women Rising
