Give a Gift that Lasts this Christmas
We can’t take back what has happened to the children that we see. However, animal, art or outdoor wellness therapy can help children deal with trauma and build new, joyful memories that last a lifetime.
1 in 20 children will suffer sexual abuse, that’s at least one child in every classroom in the country. Every year, BCWA receives hundreds of requests for help from children who have experienced domestic violence and abuse.
Give them a gift that lasts this Christmas; the chance to get back their childhood and live a happier, safer life.
Every penny counts, so please give what you can
£10 will buy a therapy workbook to support a child who has experienced sexual abuse
£20 will pay for a distraction box that includes a fidget spinner, soft toy, journal and worksheets, with items especially chosen to support mental health issues and reduce self-harm
£45 will pay for an hour of specialist counselling to help a traumatised child feel more stable, secure and safe
£100 will pay for set of art materials for our group therapy sessions for children in refuge
You will be helping children like Maria*.
Eight year old Maria moved to a BCWA refuge with her mum after escaping domestic abuse. Sadly, Maria had also been sexually abused and was severely traumatised.
Our refuges are a safe, welcoming place for families as they get back on their feet. In refuge, we helped Maria through animal therapy. Maria spoke to a trained counsellor ‘through’ a support dog that she was able to stroke and pat when she felt overwhelmed or distressed.
During her therapy sessions Maria’s councillor saw Maria gradually open up about her trauma and talk more willingly about her fears and feelings.
We are continuing to support Maria and her mum with therapy as they recover together and build new lives.
