Story

The Gettalife Project, of which I am a Trustee, is a small but life-changing charity for the people we have helped.

In an exciting venture, we are pioneering a new sound - a musical bridge to enable a creative fusion of a wonderful, exhilarating choral tone, bringing together the best of singers from the Gospel and African cultures and traditions with choristers from an English church choral background. Together they will form a unique choir to sing a new, specially commissioned anthem by the internationally acclaimed composer Jonathan Dove.

This choir, with individuals drawn together across difference and with sometimes painful histories, will lament lives lost and sing of a vision of hope to inspire through the famous words from the last book of the Bible, ”And I saw a new heaven and a new earth…and all tears will be wiped away….”

This specially created one-off mix of text, liturgy and ritual will take place at the church of St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood, ‘the Cathedral of South London,’ and will bring a message of hope and consolation to a weary world, at the Feast of All Souls, November 2025.

The Gettalife Project grew out of a special musical celebration: “Real life, Real Soul, Real Gospel” performed to a packed audience at Manchester Cathedral on November 1st, 2008. The Project's initial vision was to help young people involved in the gun culture of the inner city to discover skills and talents that give respect and potentially lead to employment! It has now widened its aims to enable the development of artistic and craft skills for young adults from a variety of backgrounds and contexts, who have a passion that can be trained to enable a future livelihood. Over the years we have worked with individual young people, offering a bespoke mentoring package. Musicians, singers, gardeners, a bookbinder, chefs… all people of talent, needing us to speak for them and enable entry into the sphere of skilled work. In our latest project, to take place in November 2025, we will be extending that approach to work with groups of young adults from the Gospel, African and English church choral traditions to present the world premiere of what we think will be an evocative and memorable anthem written by the world-famous composer, Jonathan Dove.
