BACKGROUND.

The Gambia is predominantly a Muslim country. A small West African country with a population of over 2 million. The Gambia's poverty rate has climbed to 53.4 percent. 15.5 percent of the population were multidimensionally poor, reflecting low consumption levels, limited educational attainment, and gaps in access to drinking water, sanitation and electricity.

More 10% of The Gambian population is persons with disabilities either as a result of mental, sensory or physical impairment. Although they are persons with disabilities that do not disqualify them to be entitled to the same rights and opportunities as all other human beings, their lives are handicapped by physical and social barriers in the society which hamper their full participation. Because of this, thousand of them in all parts of the country often face a life that is seemingly segregated and debased.

Our first container of over 500 mobility and disability aids was distributed in Spring 2022. If we did not recyle them the majority of them would have ended up in landfill. Doing the right thing is a win-win solution for all .Such is the plight of disabled people in need in the country we are determined to make such they are not continued to be forgotten. What we have done so far in only a drop in the ocean for the support needed. Many of the recipients can only dream of accessing a wheelchair and have lived an entire lifetime in a state of lockdown.

We want to build on the momentum. During the blessed month of Ramadan in particular we are calling for donations in the form of Zakat, Sadaqa, Sadaqa Jariyah and general donations from people of all faiths and non.

If we exceed our fundraising target - the donations simply go to the next container project. Alternatively it can used to give some financial support for the end recipients to fulfil their lives through education or employment or rest-bite from their daily struggles to survive - food packs.

Please note that Wheels to Heal is small grassroots U.K. registered volunteer led charity making a big impact overseas.

Our objectives are both environmental and humanitarian. We rescue mobility and disability aids from landfill, or offer an emotional legacy for those wishing to donate their aids through a FREE quarterly uplift service covering the whole of mainland U.K. Over 24,000 life transforming aids have been put back into use to date. This equates to over thirty 40ftHC containers and 14 countries reached (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Gambia, Ghana, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Malawi, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Uganda, and Yemen).

Our work has been recognised by as a finalist at the Just Giving Awards - Change Maker of the Year category, Awarded the British Citizens Media for International Achievement, and most recently by the UK Governments Points of Light award for people who are making a change in their community.
