Story
We believe everyone deserves a beautiful home and a place in their community.
Please donate today to help us to support people like Tilda:
Tilda came to our Number Twenty service after a breakdown in her foster care placement following allegations of abuse.
Initially very withdrawn, her engagement with staff was minimal. Tilda confided in Janice, one of our practitioners, that she was struggling with her mental health. Tilda was diagnosed with anxiety and depression and the team suspected the possibility of an eating disorder.
Janice and the team were mindful never to make Tilda feel pressured into talking. Beyond saying hello and asking how she was, they left it to Tilda to initiate conversations and build relationships at a pace she was comfortable with.
As Tilda got to know Janice she was able to open up to her and Janice organised counselling for her. Slowly, Tilda began to engage more and her confidence and self-expression developed. Janice helped Tilda to apply for voluntary work as she said this helps to keep her motivated.
Gradually Tilda’s interaction with the whole staff team grew and they witnessed a huge development in her self- confidence and independent living skills.
She now shops for food regularly and enjoys cooking. She has lots of healthy friendships and is about to go out on placement as part of her college course. Something that would have seemed impossible to the Tilda that turned up at our door 18th months ago.
