Visit the charity's profileThe Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer. [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Fitrana, Also known as Sadaqatul Fitr or Zakatul Fitr, is a charitable(Goodwill) donation that must be given before the Eid al Fitr prayer. Therefore it must be given before the end of the month of Ramadan.
Sadaqat al-Fitr is mandatory (wjib) on every legally responsible (sane and pubescent) Muslim who has possessions apart from basic needs that is valued in excess of nib (approximately £350).
A man must pay for himself and his dependents, i.e. his young (non-pubescent) children. A woman will discharge her own sadaqat al-Fitr if she has wealth equivalent to nib. However, it is permissible for the husband to pay it on behalf of his wife.
At the time of the Prophet (SAW) Fitrana (Zakat ul Fitr) would be given as one saa'. Therefore the quantity is described the Prophet (SAW) as one saa' of food (one saa' is equivalent to four madd). A madd is the amount that can be scooped up when one puts their hands together. If we translate this into a monetary value based on the price of a staple food such as flour or rice, it is approximately £3.20 Therefore, the amount due for each person is £3.20.
The obligation occurs from Fajr of d al-Fitr (1st Shawwl). It is permissible to distribute it before the day. It is recommended (mustaab) to do so before d alh. If not given on the day, the obligation to discharge it still remains; however, it is disliked to delay paying it after Maghrib alh.
What is Fidyah?
Fidya is an obligatory donation that must be made when a fast is missed through necessity.
Fidyah is only paid by one whose sickness (which renders them incapable of fasting) is permanent and there is no hope of recovery, or an extremely elderly person who is physically unable to fast. If one is likely to recover from their illness, they are not permitted to pay fidyah, rather they will be required to make qa of the missed fasts.
The amount of Fidyah: Which is to provide one person with two meals (£1.60 per meal) . We suggest that £3.20 is paid for each fast missed, to feed the poor (If someone misses all the fasts of Ramadan, it would amount to £96)
