Story
Fionn is a vibrant 6-year-old boy from Maghera who faces daily challenges with resilience and determination. Born after a prolonged delivery, Fionn experienced neonatal seizures and, by 8 months, was diagnosed with four-limb cerebral palsy (CP) with dystonia. This condition affects his muscle control, making movement and independence a daily struggle. From the moment we realised something was wrong, we’ve done everything possible to support Fionn.
Starting with NHS physiotherapy at 9 weeks old, we soon realised that additional therapies were needed to help him reach his full potential. Over the years, we’ve tried many approaches, at 13 months, we discovered the Anat Baniel Method (ABM), which was a turning point. Fionn began to army crawl and point to communicate, and although the pandemic interrupted access to this, we have continued to pursue ABM whenever possible.
Today, Fionn is a bright and curious child who loves music, numbers, and having a giggle. His progress is evident: he now crawls or knee-walks to get where he wants to go, and his speech is clearer than ever. He attends a mainstream school and has made wonderful friendships. However, Fionn still faces significant hurdles. He needs help with personal care and he relies on a wheelchair to get around outdoors. His tight muscles and involuntary movements caused by dystonia make everyday tasks a struggle.
A groundbreaking procedure called Selective Percutaneous Myofascial Lengthening (SPML) offers hope. This minimally invasive surgery can reduce the tightness in his muscles, allowing him to move with greater freedom and less pain. It’s not a cure, but it’s a transformative step toward a more active and independent future.
To make this dream a reality, we need to raise £18,000 to cover the cost of the procedure. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to helping Fionn gain greater freedom of movement and independence.
Thank you for your support. We are so grateful.
